PROBABILITY GUIDE

Understanding NFL player prop probabilities

A player prop asks whether a player will reach a specific result: for example, more than 49.5 receiving yards. A probability estimates the chance of that exact event, rather than promising what will happen.

The line defines the event

A receiver reaching 25 yards and reaching 75 yards are different events. Lower over thresholds are generally easier to reach; higher thresholds are generally harder. Compare the same player, statistic, threshold, and side when evaluating estimates.

Alternate lines change the threshold. Combined rushing and receiving yards measures the total of those two statistics; it is different from either statistic alone.

What does an 80% estimate mean?

In a well-calibrated model, a large group of comparable events assigned an 80% probability should succeed about eight times out of ten. It does not mean any one event is certain, and a few results cannot establish calibration.

Probability and value are different. An event can be likely to happen and still offer a poor price. Read the expected value guide to understand that distinction.

Limited history means more uncertainty

Rookies, substitutes, injuries, and changing roles can leave little relevant history. FairMetrik flags selections with limited historical data. Treat those estimates as more uncertain, even when the displayed probability looks high.

Review the Prometheus Engine’s model results for the distinction between historical fitted-model results and live forecasts. Data used to fit a model does not independently prove its future accuracy.

Pushes and related selections

A whole-number line can land exactly on the threshold and may settle as a push depending on the market rules. That possibility differs from winning or losing.

Selections involving the same player or game can be related. Multiplying individual probabilities assumes independence; it is not a reliable joint probability when the events are correlated.

Explore and review

Use the NFL player prop leg builder to compare available thresholds. Browsing is public; an account is needed to save your prediction log. Review settled results over time rather than judging a model from a single game.
